Selmer USA

Hello,

I’m looking for some advice please.

I have a Selmer USA Oboe that I’ve had for about 20 years and never used. I got into Saxophone instead. It’s serial number is B 53422.

I plan to advertise it for sale on e-bay but first can anyone tell me anything about it? Like model, age and how much it’s worth?

Many thanks
Morgan

Hope these are okay?

My phone is getting quite old, so if not good enough I will use a camera instead!

I'm going to assume -- sorry; not really an oboe guy -- that this is a model 1492. That's Selmer's plastic beginner oboe and it looks close enough to yours. I also looked at a couple serial numbers and B53422 looks like it fits after the Selmer Bundy line. The 122 line is wooden, so we can toss results for that.

I'm being xtra nice today for some reason, so I'll check for a value in ebay's closed ads. I'll use US currency.

Unless you're really lucky, as someone was able to sell one at $495, the average price in closed ads on ebay is around $300. The low price is around $230. Unless you have a perfectly climate controlled environment, I'm going to bet that your horn needs all new pads and corks. That'll lower the value significantly. Your case looks a bit beat up, so I'm assuming that it wasn't a perfectly climate controlled environment.

Great thanks Pete, I thought it was probably basic! I will stick to playing sax on my Selmer Tenor

FWIW, I wouldn't have minded learning to play the oboe. I can make a sound out of one, unlike my battle with the flute.

If you are looking to play a double reed instrument I'd give bassoon a try.
Having studying both, (and still playing bassoon) oboe is the toughest (chop-wise) while bassoon is easy chop-wise although the "thumb-thing" takes a bit of getting used to....also the movable tenor clef...

The tenor clef scares me. Almost as much as the cost of a bassoon :D. I also checked and reed prices start at $12. Legere plastic reeds are $135. (Both prices are approximately the same for oboe.) I knew that they were expensive. I didn't know how much.

No, my semi-pro to pro playing and singing days are way over. Unless Gandalfe sends me that clarinet, of course.

I used to play around with lots of different instruments. But I really need to practice the ones I have now more. In four bands/ensembles, with 8 hours of group practice a week, I *should* be puttin' in another 8 hours of individual practice a week.
