I played a 90 minute concert with Arturo Sandoval tonight. The big band was conducted by Ed Calle. I played baritone sax. The gig was rippin' from the very start.
I have to salute Ed Calle - The last gig I was on with his band he wanted me to play Soprillo, which is very brave of him.
Tonight Arturo pulled an unrehearsed tune out of the hat - "All the Things you Are" with a 4 way saxophone battle, no chart, just blow.
I think I lost the battle to Ed and Ken Mattis, the other tenor.
Everything else was screaming Mambos. I loved it. It takes me a couple of hours to taper off. Not all gigs are good, you know.
