I see live Klezmer bands with some frequency, and I cannot say that I have ever seen anyone play an alto. That said, I see absolutely no reason why it shouldn't be part of a routine, aside from difficulties achieving the characteristic high Clarion and Altissimo glissandos, but that can easily be attended to with another clarinetist.

The Alto CL certainly spans the gap, and has a beautiful low Chalumeau that cannot be replicated. It is sweeter and darker than sax, typically.

I have been known to play a bass clarinet in a Klezmer band (also in a bluegrass band, both soprano and bass clarinet)
